Free laptops push netbook migration

Free laptops and their increasing popularity look set to further drive the netbook market over the next year, according to one industry expert.

ARM boss Warren East thinks that the shift towards netbooks will be such that one day they lead the market.

Netbooks are some of the most common types of free laptops given away by manufacturers and providers as part of free laptops and broadband packages.

When you add to this their consumer-friendly attributes such as being easy to carry and use, it is easy to see why East believes netbooks will soon be the free laptops of choice in the industry.

"Although netbooks are small today – maybe ten per cent of the PC market at most – we believe over the next several years that could completely change around and that could be 90 per cent of the PC market," said the CEO.
